In early 2024, amidst the launch of fall lineups for various networks following months of delays, CBS made headlines with the announcement of a new NCIS spinoff. Breaking away from the franchise’s tradition of numerous offshoots, the freshly unveiled NCIS: Origins takes a unique approach as a prequel series, marking Mark Harmon’s return to the franchise since his departure in 2021. While the premise of the Gibbs-centric prequel is known, much of the series remains veiled in secrecy.

Mark Harmon, alongside his son Sean, will assume executive producer roles for the series. Although Sean Harmon previously portrayed Gibbs in flashbacks, he won’t reprise the role in Origins. Mark Harmon’s involvement is expected to be limited to narration, given that the show is set in the 1990s, making his physical appearance highly unlikely. Writers David J. North and Gina Lucity Monreal are tasked with penning the premiere episode and will co-showrun the series.
